The brocade does the talking. Flutter sleeves, a bateau neck, a slim self-fabric belt looped at the waist, a gathered skirt, and nothing to interrupt the cloth.

This is a 1950s dress, and it wears the decade in every decision. Chinoiserie brocades like this poured into home dressmakers' hands through those years, when the fabric itself was the luxury and the pattern was cut to honour it. This one was made at home. Turn it inside out and the evidence is tender: seams bound in pink lace, rows of zigzag in red and blue where someone steadied a fraying edge, a pale blue lining chosen to glow through the ground. A dressmaker made these decisions for one particular body and one particular occasion. The occasion has passed; the dress remains, which is the whole reason this archive exists.
